Chapter Twenty-One

MICHELLE

I didn’t intend to sleep over. Who sleeps with a guy on a first date? I’m such a slag. But I’m a little bit proud of myself.

We sat on the sofa until the early morning hours. Talking, drinking, kissing. By the time we noticed how late it was, it made no sense to get a taxi home. Aiden slept on the sofa, and I slept in the bed. I now smirk at the memory on the way to work.

‘Aiden,’ I loudly whispered across the open space of his apartment.

‘Yeah?’ he whispered back. ‘You okay?’

‘No. I’m cold.’

‘Do you want another blanket?’

‘No. I want you.’ Aiden’s laughter cut into the darkness; seconds later, he bounced into bed next to me. I find solace in that we didn’t have sex. I’m classier than that, plus we were a little too drunk. But, we kissed and cuddled, and I fell into a deep, beautiful sleep with his arms wrapped around me.

I felt safe.

Maggie isn’t in to interrogate me on my fake illness when I arrive at work, which adds to the joyful feeling in my heart. Though, my mood dips somewhat when I see my first client waiting for me.

‘Good morning, Pam,’ I say to her and bend down to take Felix’s head in my hands. ‘Hi, boy!’

‘Good morning to you, too. You seem spritely today.’

I turn away so Pam can’t see my red cheeks. I’m not ready to face her. Her presence invites big feelings, and I just want to float on my cloud for a little longer.

I take Felix’s lead and Pam walks back over to the door. She pokes her head out to see who’s around. Satisfied that the practice is empty – bar Sharon filing her nails at the front desk – she closes the door quietly and turns to face me.

‘I wanted to see how you’re getting on.’

‘You mean, you want to know what I’ve decided? My life-changing decision whether or not to kill people?’

Pam cocks her head to the side, her perfect curls dropping to her right shoulder. ‘Well, yes; though I prefer to think of it as saving vulnerable children.’

Pam still sounds like Pam. Looks like Pam. Acts like Pam. Except now, I know her darkest secrets and she is so exposed to me. I can see her rawness. I see her truth.

And I can feel mine, edging its way up inside of me. And it’s terrifying. Through the shockwaves, I can’t help but feel something akin to respect. Pam is determined to help these children even if she’s putting herself at risk.

I admire that. Though I quash the admiration down. I’m not ready to face it yet.

‘I just want to know how you started all this. Did you just wake up one day and think, I know how to help these kids, I’ll just go and stick a needle in the parents?’ I pull Felix into the low sink, and he begrudgingly gets in for a hose down.

‘If I tell you, it must not leave this room.
